A fresh bright nose with light notes of dark malt. The taste is hoppy and soft and the bitterness is both from the grain and the hops to create a great balance with a light carbonation.

Can from Bierkoning, Amsterdam. Aroma is roasted malt with piney hops, chocolate, citrus, liquorice in the finish. Flavour is moderate sweet with a roasty and hoppy bitter finish. Body is medium. On the roasty side with piney hops, I could have done with less liquorice and more chocolate.

Black IPA (or Cascadian dark ale) by this accomplished Swedish craft brewery, from tap at Bar Beenhouwer. Yellowish beige, tightly paper-lacing, mousy head on a pitch black beer with hazy brown edges. Aroma of ‘fondant’ chocolate, walnut oil, toffee, pine resin, grapefruit peel, salmiak, blood-like iron and something meaty (saddle of hare or something alike). Sweetish onset (candied fig) with meaty umami and blood-like iron aspects, oily and slick body, very toffeeish and almost treacle-like malt sweet body with nutty and chocolatey edges, aromatized by a dash of pine and herbal hoppiness, providing some end bitterness but in a soft way – too soft in fact for a BIPA. Like many other Euro BIPAs, lacking a bit in both hop aromatics and hop bitterness and therefore closer to a porter or stout than an actual Cascadian, but otherwise a delicious, typically Beerbliotek-streamlined and easily drinkable craft beer for sure.
