An explosive, hoppy double IPA with piney, resiny bursts from the spruce, and pops of wintergreen, mango, grapefruit and pine-like notes from the hops. The last thing this beer wants is to be a hero, but it doesn’t have a choice.

Can from The Gull, North Vancouver
Hazy dark blond colour. Aroma of piney resins with very gentle spruce. The mouthfeel is moderately sweet, with juicy hops, stone fruit; the spruce starts gentle, then elbows its way in towards the final, but it's not overpowering. For what it is, it's a fun beer and it's well made.

Pint can from The Wine Shop Charleston, 6/4/22. Hazy orange, large frothy off-white head, good retention. Weak aroma of spruce and mango. Taste is a nice counterpoint to the weak aroma. Very flavorful. Intense even. Spruce, mango, resin, pineapple, pale malt. Juicy, low bitterness. I like spruce beers and this is unabashedly spruce. Very nice.

Hazy pale amber. Thick head. There's certainly a piney note on the nose, but to me that's coming from the hops. On the palate, it's much more obviously spruce. That nice, bright spruce note mixes with some hops, but those hops seem a bit stale. It just arrived in my local shop but was brewed in November, so there's that. Comes across mellow for a DIPA.

Pounder: Lemongrass nose. Cloudy amber, medium sticky head. Lemon zest, spruce. Medium body, easy carbonation. Less citrusy hop bill would be better with spruce.

Draught at Barcade on St Marks: pours clear gold with white head. Aroma is pine and spruce and the like. Taste is bitter and full of tree. Lightly bitter.

16oz can. disappointing Imperial IPA - the spruce/pine was generic and funked.

Cute packaging, pretty good beer. The spruce tips, usually way too aggressive when used as an adjunct, are actually unexpectedly muted here, providing the slightest hint of brisk, green woodsiness behind an otherwise old-school DIPA. Orange marmalade, pine, grapefruit, and resin lead to a bitter, oily, slightly warm fade. Not bad, but without the labeling I'm pretty sure I wouldn't pick out the spruce, instead thinking this pint to be a very West Coast take on the style.
