Our Helles Rauchbier, or better known in the US as “smoked helles”, is the same recipe as our Helles Lagerbier but the grain bill includes Bamberg rauchmalt, or in other words, barley malt that has been dried with Beechwood smoke. It imparts a wonderful aroma of Beechwood rauchmalt along with the classic Helles grapiness. The flavor is bright & clean with a subtle smokiness and sweetness in the finish.

Can. Shared by SirAlex. Pours unclear pale yellow with a small white head. Elegant smoke, very subdued well integrated bamberg smoke. Slight citrus and bready malts. Super well played.

Canned 3/2/22, drunk 3/31/22. Clear, drab brass-to-blonde with a small, off-white head fading steadily to a ring. Soft, honey-dense nose quickly adds delicate smokiness. Really appreciate the difference in smoke level and character between different smoked lagers. This one is definitely on the lighter side, with light mineral, wood kindling and hints of floral and herbal hops. No alcohol or flaw noted. In the mouth it's malty up front, lending a big, round honey note that is wrapped in dry, soft smoke (clean chimney fire remnants). It does both dry and thin out heavily, leading to a rather watery finish that doesn't quite hold the smoke and rich malt flavor well enough, in my opinion. It's a tough quibble, because this is a very low gravity beer, yet Notch sets the bar so high. I just wish this had the body or even near the body of the Salem Lager I just had from them. Other than issues with the body/texture, it's pretty perfectly done.

30/12/2021. Can sample courtesy of SHIG. Pours clear pale golden with a small bubbly white head. Aroma is smoky, meaty, citrus, char burnt, wet walnut. Medium sweetness, light bitterness/tartness. Moderate body, slightly oily, soft carbonation. Not a style I'm a fan of but this was quite enjoyable.

Flavour is composed of semi sweet, rounded, cereal grains, bread, mellow smoked malts, beech wood, campfire. Really nice. Palate is semi sweet, semi crisp, highish carbonation.

Panda at home, thanks to Dave, 07/07/21. Clear golden pour with a well appointed white crown of bubbles. Nose is smoked malts, biscuit, light bonfire, toasted grains, cereals. Taste comprises smoked meats, straw, grains, campfire, smoked malts, light residual sugar, hay bale, cereals. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a balanced smoky whisper. A solid exponent of the style.

Can. CW online. Clear, yellow gold. Thin and dense, lasting, semi lacing white head. Nose has meaty smoke. Kempke ham (I miss Conrad a lot). Sweet malts. Some fruity hop in the background. Taste has a honey sweetness. Light bitterness. Smooth as silk on the palate with soft and foamy carbonation. Little bit of sourness on the finish rounds it out nicely.
