Brown 500ml bottle, best before 26 Sept 09, drank 22 Apr 09. Poured (twice) into a La Chuoffe stemmed tulip shaped glass. Mid amber, typical modern British Bitter look to it, clear, clean and bright. Sadly the head fell away on both pours very swiftly, leaving only a collar and small wispy scum on the beer. Very hard to find any aroma, a little floral sweetness maybe, but no yeast, hops or malts came to my nose. The taste was fairly non-discript too, obviously a Bitter, but lacking in depth and flavours for a commemorative brew in my opinion. There is a malt presence in the aftertaste, but not enough to excite me, or want me to rush out and buy a crate of this beer. Was expecting more from a well thought of brewery, nothing wrong with it, just a bit bland and so, so.

Original rating. The sadly typical English 4.2% bitter - watery and bland. Does nothing for me. Original rating of 2. 22nd March 2008 What a difference another pint on another day at a different pub can make! Smooth bitter, quite hop fruity and a hint of floral notes. Nothing dominates. Dry semi bitter finish.

Cask at the Monks Retreat (JDW), Reading. Amber with a thin off-white head that left lots of lacing; fruity malt aroma; sour fruit flavours with some biscuit and a prickly mouthfeel; leading to a dry, moderately hopped, finish with a touch of orange marmalade.
