Bourbon Barrel Aged Stout with Toasted Coconut & Coffee

The first pillar in the series is 2022 Benthic Barrel Aged Stout with Toasted Coconut and Coffee. This was the beer that walked us out here - electrifying a supremely decadent synapsis between black velvet, baritone, stout and our slithery little eel minds. Hand-toasted coconut, whole bean coffee and litany of lumber from bourbon's finest. Fire breathing barrel, silky moonshiner fruit, island tropicocono, morning coffee, luxury sludge smothered under a mountainous grain bill of night-black brewer's malt.

Every crevice packed.

Sampled from bottle at "Hooghe Noorden Tasting 2025". Opaque pitch black color, small brown colored head. Aroma and flavor are malts, medium roasty, sweetish, boozy, slight coffee. Solid.

Tap at FFB20, shared with the crew. I only took numerical notes while having this one.

On tap at Half Acre, pours jet black with a small brown head. Nose is jammed with intense dark roast espresso, bourbon, dark sugars, and a touch of coconut. Flavour is even better, featuring massive amounts of coconut and espresso vying for frontrunner, wrapped around oodles of bourbon and some dark sugars. An "old school" pastry BA impie, where there's still roast/big malts, not just sweetness. Everything works harmoniously. Wonderful.

On tap at the brewery. Aroma is fairly malty with lots of dark chocolate and roast notes. Notes of dark caramel, toffee and molasses as well. Moderately strong coconut notes. Light bourbon and alcohol notes with faint oak. Pours jet black with a medium sized, thick, dark, mocha head that recedes slowly to the edges. Medium high lacing and long legs. Flavor is rather sweet with lots of of dark caramel, toffee and chocolate. Notes of molasses and toast as well. Medium bitterness and medium alcohol notes. Moderately strong coffee and coconut notes. Light bourbon and faint oak notes. Mouthfeel is full bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall, a really nice imperial stout. Great coffee and coconut notes. Decent barrel character but it's a bit hidden by the coffee and coconut. Very sweet, but not in a cloying way.

Vintage 2023. Black body, with a small, tan head. Aroma of bourbon, dark chocolate, toffee, soy sauce, liquorice, coconut. Tastes similar, with more cocoa powder. Full oily body, with a low carbonation. Finishes medium sweet, medium roasty, with bourbon, dark chocolate, coconut. Tasty! Great balance between robust and sweet notes and the bourbon barrel well integrated. Alcohol is well hidden. Score: 8 / 4 / 8 / 4 / 17

Update from last year's version - It's still very good with moderate sweetness, bourbon barrel and coffee, however subtle; still can't pick up the coconut

Thick, low viscosity, sweet, boozy, roasty. Dark cocoa, roasty coffee, boozy bourbon. Finishes dry and a bit bitter. Very nice but not quite what I expected.
