Another fresh development marrying elements of Phipps historic recipes with iconoclastic new styles. The dark malt signature is robust but smooth whilst the fruity but subtle hop flavours give the beer an easy drinkability. Black Star was originally a winter seasonal special but demands from discerning drinkers has kept it in our range all year.

Cask at the brewery. Pours deep brown with a beige cap. Aroma: burnt malts, liquorice hints, hoppy. Taste: light to moderate sweet & moderate bitter, soft roasted malts, hoppy tones coming through towards the finish. Medium body with soft carbonation. Unusual BIPA but decent flavours

Bottle from Bicester Avenue Garden Centre at 4.8%. Mahogany-black with a thick beige to tan coloured head and a light fizz. Coffee and caramel up front then wood and a hint of pine and spice. Nice chewy mouthfeel and quite a dry finish. I liked this.

From wooden cask, third shared with Finn at Manchester Beer & Cider Festival, Wood Bar. Deep black coloured body, poor lacing, patchy head. Chocolate-grainy aromas, promising. Blended taste of dark malts, moments of chocolate and liquorice. Has got a piney touch to a malt-driven end. Pleasant. (2nd day of the festival, 23.01.2020).

Bottle from the Blue Glass, Bedford. Darkest brown and only slightly translucent and a light off-white head. Burnt malt aroma with hints of salt liquorice. Bitter, bitter taste with super roasted malt and some berry-laden hop in the finish. Black grape in the aftertaste. Flat body. Not a typical Black IPA but I found this surprisingly good.
