Inspired by the strong stouts and porters brewed in 19th century Britain, this recipe features some of the classic ingredients for beers of this period. Brewed with malt consisting primarily of pale, brown and black malt, with large hop additions of Goldings in the kettle. Fermented with a historic yeast and naturally conditioned in bottle and keg.

375ml bottle. Black with a frothy brown head. Aroma of dark chocolate, roast malt, liquorice, coffee. Taste is very rich, dark chocolate, roast malts, coffee, liquorice, leather, caramel, sweet but with a lovely strong bitter finish, light ashy note. Full bodied. An outstanding old school stout, 1867 was quite long ago after all. Superb!

Keg at Farmers Boy, St Albans, Herts. A black coloured pour with a medium beige head on top. Roasty, malty, chocolate, coffee taste and aroma. A rather bitter imperial stout, it's quite drinkable but also rather harsh. Might be better after a few years ageing.

Bottle from The Beerhive. Black body with a thick tan head. Faint lacing. Aroma of nuts, espresso and cocoa powder. Flavour of black pepper, cigar and roasted malt. Medium body with a smooth texture. Light fizz. Rich and wonderfully simple. This is an excellent beer. More non adjunct stouts please!
