70/- Another in our series of classic styles, the 70 Shilling Ale is our interpretation of a Scottish Heavy. This 4.2% beer is light amber in colour, and has been hopped heavily in the brewhouse with Spalt Select from Germany, and UK Goldings, to give a balanced and bitter ale with notes of red berries, and toffee.

440ml can. Almost clear golden amber, white head. Aroma caramel malts, berries/dried fruits. Taste is hoppier than expected, herbal/grassy and berry fruits, caramel and biscuity malts, light bitter hop finish. Light-medium bodied. Again I've had very little trad Scottish ales to compare it to but this drank like a hoppy Golden to me; nice but preferred the 60/-

Cask at The Star & Garter, Bromley. Amber pour with a white head. Nose is dried fruit, orange marmalade, apricot jam. Similar approach in the taste, spot of white pepper lurking in the background. Tasty little number.

Can from Raynville Superstore. It pours amber - blonde with a medium fluffy white head. The aroma is malt - driven, biscuit, cereal, toasty grains, ryvita, toffee and some red berries. The taste is firmly, dry with a pleasing bitterness which lingers, grassy, herbal, toasty grain and spice, muted fruitiness, biscuity malt base and some dry wood. Finish is lingering bitterness and touch herbal. Light+ carbonation. Would like to try his on cask. Interesting take on the rarely seen 70 shilling. Prefer the 60 though.

Can from Against The Grain. Hazy golden body with a thin white head that fades. Steady carbonation. Patchy lacing. Aroma of biscuit and caramel. Flavour of brown bread and honey. Medium body with a slick texture. Light fizz. I prefer the 60/ to this as it was darker and sweeter. This is still a very nice beer though.
