Draught at the brewery, 2/13/14
Full, fluffy white head is very slow to recede, leaving light lacing atop a brilliant gold body, well-clarified and with plentiful carbonation.
Full on brett in the nose is light, fruity and moderately tart, with more citrus rind than hard band-aid-like presence. Just a touch of light honey from the malt and very little barrel character (which is awesome, IMHO) let the brett really shine. With warmth, a touch of candy-like sweetness emerges, but this is the extent of the brandy barrel, while the citrus notes grow stronger and more depth to the wild yeast and bacteria can be seen. Very nice strength of aroma, even through the persistent head. No alcohol or flaws whatsoever.
After a promising start to the nose, I found Art #17 to really come up short in flavor, with a very dull, chewy, almost nutty palate that was either a product of too much tannin (wasn’t astringent though) or other strange fermentation bi-products. This, on the other hand, was beautifully crisp, just as in the aroma, with only malt for body and just a hint of balancing sweetness and pure brett acids leading to a decidedly tart, but not full on sour flavor. Some light nuttiness and candy-like sweetness/spiciness from the barrel is reserved in the flavor, just as in the nose, while no alcohol or any off flavors are felt here. Complex tropical fruit flavors continue to develop, and though this is no lambic, it still has minor hints of a 3F gueuze. Limeskin, very light lactic sourness. Just like 3F gueuze, this is not over-the-top sour, and rather provides much more in the way of playful brett acids and lots of citrus. As far as the citrus goes, my only complaint was that it did seem to be a bit more dominant than I would like. By the end of the glass, it was beginning to taste like there was orange or lemon zest in here (there is not). The texture is creamy and smooth, the carbonation tight and engaging. Perhaps just a touch thicker than I’d prefer, overall. Minor complaints, though. Otherwise, another phenomenal product from these guys. I expect some very, very, very good things to come of their new brewery.

Draft at the brewery taproom - Everett. Pours hazy gold with a creamy white head. The nose has some dry citrus, lemon rind. Light sweet flavor with good bretty funk, further citrus peel, mellow rindy bitterness. Light to medium bodied with average carbonation. Very clean to finish, some tangy lemon, mellow funky twang, pale malt sweetness, light dry hay bitterness. Exceptional.
