Heritage Suffolk Pale Ale has been created using East Anglian Chevallier malted barley. Reintroduced in 2013 by local maltster, Dr David Griggs of Crisp Maltings; five preserved Chevallier seeds were re-sown and crops harvested to create Govinda by Cheshire Brewing in 2015, several American, British and European beers in 2016, and then in 2017 the volume required to replicate a traditional Greene King real ale from the 1800s. Suffolk Pale Ale uses Saaz and Strisselspalt hops to give the brew a refreshing flavour. Herbal, citrus, floral and spicy notes add to the sweet malt taste for a more easy drinking heritage ale.

Cask at Wheatsheaf, Stoke on Trent. Pours a golden yellow with minimal white head. Just some floral hops in the aroma. More hops in the mouth, but these are more traditional style, along with ginger and some traces of herbs and malts. Finish is hoppy too, and somewhat dry. This is rather nice, with a bit of bite to it – and definitely swiggable !

Tight off white head stayed on a well carbonated amber coloured body. Vinous Roma with light malt & light hops & caramel. Medium bodied, tingly on the tongue with a clean back. Well balanced bitter tastes with spice, tea, champagne & zest.

Bottle at home in Hackney - picked up at Waitrose. Pours clear honey-gold with a billowing, frothy white head. Lots of bready pale malts, some sun-kissed grains, semi-ripe citrus fruits, grass, a little yeast. Light bodied with active carbonation. Finishes with some grain husk, further relaxed grassy bitterness, florals, hay, pale bread, orange rind. It's not bad, to be fair. Drinks pretty easily.

Bottle from Tesco, Guildford. Floral. Malts. Lavender. Pale orange amber. Bubbly white head. Light-mesium bitter. A slight tang to it. Low key malts. Light bodied. Thin. Fizzy carbonation. Abrupt finish. Drinkable but typically bland Greene King effort. At least it was being sold off cheap when I tracked some down.
