It’s that season again, time for giving thanks, eating lots, and pumpkin beer! We made this batch of pumpkin ale with about 75 pounds of pumpkins that we chopped up and roasted ourselves, in addition to pumpkin pie spice to add to the aroma and flavor. This beer has a medium body and a low hopping to let the pumpkins to shine through.

On tap at Capitol City Brewing - Downtown, October 2011. Hazy dark golden with a small white head. This was too sweet and spicy for me. I find it hard to appreciate the taste of pumpkin.

Draught at the brewpub. Saftevand aroma. Hazy grey amber colour. Small white head. Mildly spicy pumkpin pie spice flavour. Well-balanced, not too sweet.

Draught at the brewpub, Downtown location
Hazy golden color. Light cinnamon aroma. It has a weak body, poor flavor, a bit soapy, with light cinnamon touch; dry final, the bitterness is a bit harsh then. Poor.

Growler from dkachur! Thanks, for my last state/DC rating to complete the US! Nose is heavy with pumpkin, nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves. Cloudy orange with a medium yellowish beige head. Flavor is pumpkin pie with some bitterness that does show through. Finish is lightly bitter. Not my favorite pumpkin ale but quite decent!

Growler dkachur. Thanks for the DC rate (and, yes, Dallas Crew, I did handbottle you some). Hazy orange pour with a slowly fading off-white head. Good lace. Spice, eggnog, soap, pumpkin cookie aroma. Taste is dry and a bit bitter/astringent finish. Spicy and wheaty. Nutmeg. Decent. Dry mouthfeel, medium bubbles.

Appearance was an moderately hazy full orange color with a small head. Aroma full of pumpkin spice, with notes of pumpkin pie spices: cinnamon, nutmeg. Pumpkin taste, again, with the associated pumpkin pie flavors. Not the best pumpkin beer I’ve had, but certainly the best new one of the season and something to pick out if you like such things if you see it on tap.

The name makes me think this should be a pumpkin doppelbock. That concept intrigues me. Sampled on draft at the Shirlington brewpub. Pours a hazy orange color with a medium head. Good head retention and lacing. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma is very spicy with cinnamon, cardamom and nutmeg. Actually reminiscent of eggnog. Also notes of lime and pumpkin. Taste is a very similar spice mix to the aroma along with pumpkin. Slightly tart finish. Medium bodied.
