Dark amber color, ok beige head. Earthy hops in the nose, hints of toastyness. Light-bodied. Front has some toasted malts, then English hops and lingering bitterness in the aftertaste. Ok.

Gravity cask at Olde England, Northampton. Mid-brown and translucent. Flat, no carbonation or head to speak of. Chocolate malt aroma with the slightest hint of sarsaparilla. Sweet malty and chocolatey taste. A bittering hop note holds the sweetness back for the balanced finish. Light body. I appreciate what Phipps is doing with bringing back these traditional recipes. Some leave a lot to be desired, but this one’s pretty good.
