Draught at EBF, 2/5/16.
Deep ebony-cocoa body shows moderate clarity and a tan head atop that recedes to a small cover.
Coffee, treacle and dark, ashy-roast give the impression of a heavily dark-malted nose with light touches of creme brulee and a bit of woodiness on the end. Not alcoholic and no flaws.
Like Chris says, there’s little, if any, apple brandy here and it comes off as a slightly buttered oak character mixing with toffee, cola, light raisins and some bitter roastiness. I didn’t find the body to be all that full, though I keep forgetting this isn’t an imperial stout, at least not technically? I suppose a baltic porter is going to come off a bit lighter, which this certainly does. Carbonation is a little light, though the malts aren’t terribly concentrated as a result. The bitterness and oak don’t really do much for me here, other than dry out the beer and reduce the effect of the base malts. Just seems a bit stretched thin and I’m not finding anything particularly endearing.

Tap sample at EBF 2016 Rich chocolate almost better like maltiness with lots of brandy and stone fruitiness to offset it. Very tasty and who doesn’t love a hobbit inspired brew?

Draft Extreme Beer Fest 2016. Aroma is charred grain, chocolate malt, very light oak. No apple Brandy on the nose.
Taste is dominated by charred malt, light sugar, chocolate and light oak. Body leans on the full side with the alcohol being totally hidden. If I had to bet money, I would say this is the same Apple Brandy barrel they used to age El Lechedor in. That being said I hope they don’t use the barrel again because no apple Brandy was found in this brew. El Lechedor must have sucked it all out of the wood. Unless there are keg variations because it’s simply not here.
