Draught at Deep Ellum, 4/7/18.
Clear dark amber. Large beige head showing strong retention.
Bready-sweet malts with light melanoidin. Hay, dry leaves and lightly floral-to-spicy notes all emanate from the hops. But for being advertised as a Hoppy American-German doppelbock, this doesn't strike me as pushing the envelope on the hops. Which is probably a good thing, honestly. No alcohol or flaw.
In the mouth it's sweet, bready and moderately bitter, showing good balance, as a result. Sourdough and melanoidin attest to the good malt complexity. Great depth/texture with engaging carbonation and clean throughout. No out-of-place citrus or any other strange American hop notes. If it's here, it's mostly covered by the excellent maltiness.

Fool's Gold tap: pours a thick almost nitro looking head over a murky brown. Aroma is surprisingly faint for a doppelbock... predictable aroma of a mix of fruity malts and some hops. Taste is moderately bitter. A sort of attenuated malt backbone. Not very sweet. Not as good as I hoped.

On tap at Churchkey, murky copper amber with some grey head. Nose has malt, date, rubber, booze, yeast. Flavor is sweet, date, brown sugar, some tamarind, grains too. Full bodied, sticky finish.
