Can, forgot to check date, drunk 1/21/22. Dark mahogany, good clarity, medium-sized, tan head shows moderate retention. Full of molasses, prune, dark roast and toffee with light citrus/pine accents, but very much in the background. Clean, with low alcohol appearance. Good viscosity, soft, malty texture, moderate sweetness with fig, plum, prune and molasses and good, roasted bitterness on the finish. Clean, not boozy and I love the dedication to the more traditional style here. No adjuncts or overhopping.

Roast and caramel. Black pour with mocha head and lacing. Dark chocolate and lighter sense of coffee. Pretty nice stuff. Bittersweet finish. Heavy on malt. Light sense of licorice. Tall can from trade.

Keg pour at NH Brewfest. Appearance is opaque black, small off-white head ring with mild lacing. Aroma is pleasant roasted malt with bit of liquor, coffee, cocoa. Taste is very sweet, almost too sweet, with a bit of cocoa and coffee as with aroma. Palate is light-to-medium bodied, average texture, finish is mostly sweet with slight bitter balance.

22oz bottle pours a watery, translucent deep brown with some cloudy white head. Nose is sugary, malty, bread, chocolate, cola. Flavor is sweet, caramel, toasted bread, flat cola. Medium bodied finish.

Bottle # 390 Brew # 1162. Slow poor into a snifter produced large foamy, thick, abundant off white head. Head covers the snifter on the way down. Nose of slight alcohol and malt. Taste is roasted malt with a hint of chocolate in the finish. Mouthfeel is silky and creamy. Medium almost full bodied. I paid $13.99 for this bottle, we think $14 could be spent on a much better brew.

Overly expensive 22oz bottle poured into a snifter. Pours a solid black with no light penetration. smallish tan head dissipates quickly to a ring around the top of the glass. Smells of roast caramel, toffee, and chocolate, spicy perfumy hops, touches of alcohol and a slight smoky phenolic in there as well. Taste is roasty and smoky, mix up with some chocolate, caramel, and spicy hops. The body on this one starts off really thick, but somehow finishes quite dry on the palette with a lingering smoky roasty-ness. Low level of carbonation, creamy smooth mouthfeel. This is not the worst stout I’ve set to my lips, but certainly not worth the 20 dollar price tag. The body could be a little thicker, and I think the smoke is too strong and detracts more than it enhances this brew. One and done for me.

On tap at Moat. Pours mahogany-tinged black into a shaker. No head, but mocha hugs rim. Burnt chocolate aromas. Dry and sweet with chocolate upfront and a lasting espresso finish. Served too cold.
