Each February, the seasonal aisle of the grocery store morphs into a sea of bright red, heart-shaped boxes. Filled with an assortment of chocolate treats, the favorites always seem to disappear first. For us, that's the coconut truffle.
Comprised of a blend of bourbon barrel-aged components 1-2+ years, old, Barrel-Aged Chocolate Coconut Truffle pours opaque black, immediately presenting its array of chocolate shop aromas. Milk chocolate, toasted brown sugar, and molasses greet the palate up front, with notes of coconut, vanilla cream, and bourbon providing well-integrated highlights as the glass warms. Moderately sweet, with a viscous mouthfeel, this entry to our Dessert Series remains remarkably drinkable throughout. It is our hope that you'll share a bottle with someone you love this Valentine's Day.
STYLE: Imperial Stout
ABV: 15.6%
HOPS: Co2 Hope Extract
MALT: American 2 Row Barley, Crisp Light Munich, Caramel Malt, Chocolate Malt, Simpson DRC, Simpson Aromatic Malt, White Wheat, Flaked Oats, Black Patent, C-60, Roasted Barley
ADDITIONAL INGREDIENTS: Cacao Nibs, Coconut, Madagascar Vanilla Bean, Milk Sugar

500 ml bottle. shared by tfontana, much thanks Tom! Aroma is subtle coconut, milk chocolate, frosting. It really IS a melted coconut truffle in a glass. 15.6 % it’s ridiculously hidden. Rich and decadent. Best split 4 ways but certainly delicious.

Bottle (2/14/21) pour from the brewery in Fenway. It's an opaque black with no sparkle with nice viscosity, thin ring of beige head with no lacing. Aroma is moderately strong roasted malt, coconut, chocolate, oak. Taste is strong mix of sweet bourbon, chocolate, coconut, oak. Mouthfeel is full bodied with thick, frothy texture, soft carbonation and finish as taste. Overall, a decadent treat that is rich in flavor and mouthfeel but not over the top in small doses--this was split four ways--would I finish this myself over a night? Slight alcohol heat initially from the bourbon (but belies 15.6%) in the sip but is gone quickly.

Bottled 2/4/21, drunk 9/4/21.
Inky black, untested clarity. Tan head quickly fades to a ring.
BIG candy bar nose. Chocolate fudge, honey, vanilla and light coffee. I really like how minimal the coconut is. Very folded in to the rest of the beer with very low alcohol warmth. Barrel character/aging imparts light oxidation but not as much as their non pastry stouts and it still feels pretty young, vibrant, fruity and sweet.
In the mouth it's HUGE candy bar feels. Like every sip gives you a chewy, nougaty, caramelly, vanillay sweet candy character that somehow seems to be balanced enough by the roasted malt/barley and the age. Massive and decadent but can't deny, if you're in the mood for some rich candy bar, chocolate, coffee, coconut, vanilla character, this thing has you covered. Overall low on actual barrel character.
