In August 2020, we released our take on Black is Beautiful Imperial Stout with our friends at White Lion Brewing as part of an international movement to directly address police brutality and the legal injustices that American people of color face every day. This project saw participation from over 1,200 breweries in 22 countries, raising much-needed awareness for inequity and funds for organizations that are putting in the work towards equality and inclusion.
The founder of Black is Beautiful is Marcus Baskerville, Owner and Head Brewer at Weathered Souls Brewing. We got to know Marcus through this project and quickly became fond of his lineup of beers, in particular the impressive array of Imperial and Barrel-Aged Stouts that the brewery releases regularly. When the opportunity arose to collaborate on a beer together, we noted our shared appreciation for BBQ and fused the storied traditions of pit smoking and stout brewing. After 16 months of rest in bourbon oak, we present the 2022 BA version of Feed Your Soul.
Featuring barley smoked on our Primitive Pit smoker over New England maple and oak, BA Feed Your Soul pours a deep, opaque black. The aroma displays a complexity achieved by using a variety of specialty malts. Rich baker's chocolate, caramelized brown sugar, sticky molasses, and freshly-ground coffee lead the way up front. An underlying complementary smoke profile drifts throughout each sip, never stealing the show but rather adding nuance throughout the glass. Full-bodied, with mild alcohol warmth capping off the finish, BA Feed Your Soul’s complexity is unveiled, with oak & sweet vanilla bourbon contributing secondary tones.
STYLE: Imperial Stout
ABV: 14.2%
HOPS: Co2 Hop Extract
MALT: Munich, American 2 Row Barley, Rolled Oats, Chocolate Malt, Simpson DRC, Place Chocolate Malt, Smoked Malt, Black Patent, C-60, C-80, C-120, Melanoidin
ADDITIONAL INGREDIENTS: Piloncillo Cane Sugar

Bottled at Goblet, enormous thanks Splivalo for sharing! Very dark, blackish brown body. Huge, oily malty aroma, coconutty barrel notes, some caramel and cocoa. Lean, smooth taste, more barrely coconut, bit ashy, dark chocolate, light grapes, dryish, but warming, enormously warming even. This is excellent - not the best I've had, but an impressive, big beer!

Pint bottle shared at Benny’s place, Kuala Lumpur. Poured almost black in colour with little life. The aroma is roasted malt, molasses. The flavour is liquorice bitter, light sweet, with a smooth, rich, roasty, slightly oily, dry oaky, chocolate, red berry fruit, light warm boozy, liquorice bitter palate. Over medium bodied with flat carbonation.

Bottled 500ml. -at Goblet Zagreb. 14.8%ABV. Pitch black coloured, small beige head, bourbon and light alcohol in the nose. Vanilla, oak, alcohol, moderate roast and light nutty with spicy and boozy finish. Well done but 49€ for this bottle is quite over-priced.

Fort Point draught, 11/26/22. Dark ebony, tan head to ring. Big bourbon, not sharp/hot or coconut forward, thankfully. Good amount of spice and liquor that's not too sharp itself. Mixes well with fudge and salty roast. Don't quite get the smoke but it's earthy and salty and close enough. Not boozey nor does it seem too sugary. Malty and rich with plentiful raisin, date and plum. Bourbon spiciness picking up through the middle and cutting the near-syrupy, but still well attenuated maltiness. It's quite a bit of bourbon, licorice and prune-raisin, but it's thick, rich and nicely dry.
