100% of the grain in this beer was grown, harvested, fermented, conditioned, and packaged at Wheatland Spring. Planted in 2019 and harvested in 2020, the barley was custom-craft malted in small batches, yielding multiple roasts for layers of flavor. All of this was done especially for this beer by our friends at Murphy & Rude Malting.
Within days of leaving the malt house, the malt was double-mashed in our brewhouse, feet from where the barley once grew. The estate barleywine then aged for a year in Catoctin Creek Virginia-grown Rye Whisky barrels.
As the barleywine emerged from this slumber, it had much to say without the need for additional ingredients to find its voice. On approach, the ale offers a deep, round date sweetness from the roasted malts, tempered by a dry finish thanks to the oak. The lush caramel developed during the five hour boil moves gently through the mid-palate, revealing layers of toasted graham cracker, fig, and crème brûlée as it warms in your glass. The finish is a reminder of its stature and time in spirit barrels. This beer aims to thread the needle of decadence without overindulgence and complexity without over-complication.

375ml. Think this cost me $35 at the brewery. I get this is estate grown and Virginia bourbon barrel aged but damn, that's steep. Deep, oily, brown, ring of khaki head. Legs. Nose is deeply malty, grain, butterscotch, nuts, huge treacle. Sweet, malty, grainy and the barrel and booze arrive. Full bodied, long, sticky finish. Good. 8 8.5 7.5 7 7.5

Bottle picked up from the brewery on a recent road trip - dark ruby, nearly black, thin tan lace - nose of treacle, toffee, fig, date, port wine, oak - flavors of port, fig, raisin, date, leather, earthy - really light background funk and oxidation - the barrel treatment is very subtle/understated and delicate - the 14% abv is not at all detectable - very traditionally British - the fact that they grew all the grain themselves (apparently in a single field) is a huge accomplishment and a testament to the love that went into this, which is apparent in the finished product - excellent.

Tap at Tørst. Muddy dark brown color with tiny beige bubbles. Aroma is big raisins, chocolate, bourbon. Taste is big chocolate, vanilla, dried fruits, classic Barleywine flavours, perhaps bit light-bodied almost. Oily mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Tasty!

Tørst draught, 4/28/23. Clear maroon-mahogany. Dark beige head to ring. Some alcohol (not sharp) mixing with huge raisin-vanilla. Caramel and prune on the end with tons of spicy, lightly salty whiskey. Big ol raisin-caramel. Very plummy. Round, sweet, but with strong bread and acidity in the finish. Maybe a touch lighter bodied and breadier than I'd prefer, with some alcohol throughout, but I can respect the craft here and I'm floored that this is all their own grown grain.

Draught @ Grand Delancey. Clear dark brown with red highlights, small frothy dark beige head, sharp fruity aroma, low carbonation, initially sweet malty taste with dried red fruits, oak and bit of alcohol bite, thin body, long medium bitter finish. Very smooth barleywine.
