The Elaborative: Since its inception in 2011, this brewing collaboration has always included like-minded friends Brad Clark and/or Chad Yakobson. These fermentative experiments have grown out of the desire to further our understanding of the interactive complexities of our process while trying to abandon our preconceptions and further our connections with one another.

Brewed in June of 2020—in collaboration with Brad Clark and his barrel-aged/membership-only Private Press Brewing—together we crafted this 33º imperial stout, then aged portions simultaneously in wet Bourbon barrels and Cognac barrels. After 26 months of conditioning in barrels, we conditioned the beer atop Brad’s signature blend of vanilla beans multiple terroirs. The subsequent curation of barrels and vanilla yields a unique, luxurious, and complex expression.

Shared in VT. Rich and sweet, ample liquefied berries, raisins, gooey chocolate and toffee accents, mellow bourbon and creamy vanilla. Soft boozy kick. Mild roast. Lightly warming finish, touches of stickiness. Quite drinkable. Nice depth.

Bottle pour at the brewery, 9/13/23. Undetermined clarity. Dark raspberry-brown. Tan bubbles cluster in edges Alcohol alternating with strong whiskey as brown sugar inserts itself somewhat ingloriously in between. Maybe vanilla has exacerbated things. The malt is well-done, though, with low roast and a cacao-like character with light fudge and caramel. Very, very fruity yeast with less alcohol and sharp whiskey as it warms, surprisingly. Soft, chewy, lightly syrupy, not incredibly thick or anything, though very sweet for Hill, possibly one-upping the recent Aaron releases. No roast; this could almost be a barleywine. Vanilla is spicy, very flavorful, bourbon is very spicy, very flavorful. It's a difficult ask but I wish it were fuller, rounder, thicker and drier. Another year should help dull some of the sharpness and maybe dry some of the sweetness, but the loose texture on the finish is concerning. The heavily fruity, spicy, ebullient vanilla, bourbon and raisiny-chocolatey malt is a strong point here.

Bottle. Pours clear black, small beige head, decent lacing. Aroma is rich, fudge, cocoa, vanilla, bourbon. Flavor is sweet, light bitter, wonderful. Reminds me of parabola in the day. Full body.

500ml (thx, Frank S.!) shared with Farees and Matt @ Ryan's. Appearance: very dark brown with a nice dark beige head. Aroma: lots of vanilla, some barrels and sweetness, and a bit of dark fruits and chocolate. Taste: along the same lines, quite a lot of vanilla, barrels, and chocolate. Also, quite sweet and thick for HF stout. Overall: good one and nicely balanced, as usual.

Poured from 500mL bottle (side by side with Elaborative #6). Very dark brown with minimal beige head. Vanilla, smooth bourbon, feint cognac. Vanilla overpowers the cognac a little bit, but quality tasty vanilla. Prefer #6 by a touch.

500mL bottle side by side with Elaborative #6, pours black with a small light brown head. Aroma is full of vanilla beans upfront, followed by gentle bourbon barrels and a touch of cognac. Flavour is loaded with wonderfully elegant vanilla bean character upfront, followed by bourbon barrels, and moderate roast.

Bottle shared by Jeff, thanks! Pours near black with an earthy brown head that dissipates nearly completely. Aroma has earthy dark grains and roasted malts with a bit chocolate underlying. Flavor is chocolate forward with a bit of maple, sweet dark grains and roasted malts supporting.
