Sometimes you get an idea you just can’t shake. You need to see it through. Black Apple is such an idea. A black licorice and apple sour beer. Alluring like an 80’s black light poster. Something different!
One day, brewer Magnus came to work with a bag of candy. A licorice/sour apple candy to be precise. Handing pieces out to whomever wanted it. David wanted it, so he took a piece. Then he took another one. Then, another one. He was completely hooked. A seed had planted itself in his head. And, the idea just grew and grew. It grew so big, it grew into this beer. David had to make it. We had to make it. A black, sour beer that tastes of licorice and apples might be taking it to far. But, sometimes you need to go to far in order to see how far you can go. And honestly, we’ve not gotten far enough yet.

330ml bottle @ Chez Sophie, Shrewsbury. Pours dark with reddish hints, thin tan ring head. Aroma of light liquorice, with sour apple laces taking prominence. Taste is initial umami liquorice coating the palate with sour apple shades giving fleeting appearances. Trying challenging new flavours is one of the reasons I immersed myself in craft beer, and I’m glad Dugges have attempted this.
