Pours dark brown/black color with light brown head. Aromas of roasted malts, chocolate, mint and licorice. Similar flavors that just don’t do it for me. Medium to full body with average carbonation.

Sample on tap at the British Beer company tonight. Solid black color with a smallish off white head. The aroma is over the top with peppermint. Mild caramel butterscotch and chocolate round out the nose. The flavor is a chocolate and peppermint affair, although the mint does seem to get a bit harsh at times. That characteristic Shipyard burnt butterscotch popcorn flavor is there, but drowned out by the mint. Medium to thick body with a light to moderate level of carbonation, and a creamy smooth mouthfeel. Better than some other peppermint stouts I’ve had, but still falls short of that peppermint patty sensation that I’m hoping for.

Pours black into a snifter. Tan head with medium retention recedes to hug rim. Spearmint and chocolate aromas. Medium bodied with sharp spearmint oil upfront turning to chocolate in the middle before returning to mint in the lasting finish.

I have to write a disclaimer here. I am a lover of stouts but am not a fan of this brewery as a whole. I was as objective as possible when rating this. 22 oz. bottle. Looks the part. Aroma is mostly spearmint with traces of chocolate underneath all the mint. Flavor upfront is mint followed by hints of licorice. Traces of roasted chocolate malt and ash in the finish. Lingering mint is nearly overpowering. Well on the bright side the ABV is covered up nice but that could be from the strong mint that dominates everything else. Overall much better then I guessed but I will not be a repeat buyer of this brew.

Bomber from Country Club Liquors, sounded interesting so I thought I’d try it. Nose is chocolate, light Spearmint gum, and a bit of licorice. Black with a medium, heavy lacing cinnamon tan head. Flavor is chocolate, light mint, and a very light background bitterness. One of the best Shipyard’s I’ve had.

Bomber from the Walnut Creek (CA) BevMo. Pours very dark brown with a dark tan head. Aroma of chocolate and licorice. Maybe mint. Full bodied. Flavor is milk chocolate, licorice note, burnt malt, and coffee in that order, but the mint popped up somewhere in the series. Interesting and tasty. Finishes nearly dry, and something like, but not exactly, bitter. Chocolate sort of saves this mix.
