A robust, yet surprisingly refreshing porter, Mud Puppy is a favorite of dark beer lovers. Characterized by a thick, rocky head and luscious chocolate-like nose, the malty profile is balanced by liberal hopping for its style

12oz bottle oddly not rated until now. Deep what looks to be unfiltered burgundy-brown. Thin, steady, creamy white head. Smooth, mellow chocolate aroma. Full and official, a really nice chocolate edged Porter. Middle of the road, but true to style, really well balanced. Thick specialty malt tones, on the lighter side of full-bodied. Solid offering.

Some store in Chicago: Pours a dark brown . Aroma is basically a whole lot of chocolatey malt, along with a healthy dosage of hoppiness. Taste is crisp, well-balanced, bitter, and sweet. The sweetness and the bitterness seem to be coming from distinct places, but both work well together. More hops than usual for a porter, although I have had hoppier. Chocolate is the main flavor. Medium-bodied. Pretty good, although this is nothing really extraordinary.

12 oz. bottle courtesy of Tripplebrew. Notch on label says brewed in APR. Used an English pint glass. Thin ring of off white head hugs the glass. Mild to no CO 2. Nose is light chocolate nose, not much else. Lighter body with flavors of roasted coffee, chocolate and caramel malt. The finish has a lightly bitter coffee aftertaste. Decent brew overall.

Bottle at Birch & Barley, October 2011. Dark brown with a small head. Quite a lot of chocolate in this one, also roasted malt. Smooth mouth feel and a long bitter aftertaste. Not bad.
