Blended Barrel-Aged Ale
Madness & Civilization is a panorama of our barrel aging program—oak-aged beers that emerge from their individual silences to find structure and voice as a unified composition. This is the result of an unpredictable state of permanent happenstance—a dialogue with our evolving approach to blending that challenges convention and circumstance. Each release will include multiple threads and is likely to approximate the style of an imperial stout.
Madness & Civilization #10 is comprised of Damon—aged in barrels from our favorite bourbon distilleries for over 2 years—and 2-year old barrel-aged Everett, along with a small portion of Genealogy of Morals aged for 27 months in rye whiskey barrels. The blend has been bottle conditioned for 6 months and is now ready for release.

Bottle thanks to Mike. Pours black with small tan head that lasts. The aroma is roasted malt, rye, nuts, bourbon, wood. Thick, chewy roast, vanilla, roasted malt, rye whiskey, oak, nice sweetness, enjoyed this.

Bottle thanks to Vin! Pours opaque black, medium creamy brown head, dissipates slowly, good lacing. Aroma is roast, anise, cocoa. Flavor is medium sweet, light plus bitter. Full body, creamy mouthfeel. Really good, as would be expected.

500mL bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma brings out lots of bourbon barrels, followed by medium roast. Flavour is intense, with heaps of bourbon barrels, alcohol, roasted malt and a touch of cocoa. Wonderful bourbon character. Lovely.

Dark brown. No head. The aroma shows some pretty strong oak toastiness, a bit of cocoa, Okinawan dark sugar...sweet, has a nice spicy character from the oak. The sugars are amazing, There's a rich, balanced character. The barrel not only lends toastiness, with a touch of acidity.

500 ml bottle, bottled 2017-04-17.
Black body, with a medium, dense, coffee-colored head.
Aroma of bourbon, melting dark chocolate, cocoa, some coconut, coffee, liquorice, subtle dark fruits.
Tastes quite similar, with some smokey notes.
Full, oily mouthfeel, with a moderate carbonation.
Finishes roasty, medium bitter, a bit smokey, a bit bitter, with coffee, cocoa, liquorice, some bitter chocolate.
Tasty. Intense, quite boozy, with some smokey notes. Well balanced, the right levels of sweetness and roastiness. Not outstanding maybe, but really comfortable.
