330mL bottle at BrewDog - Kungsholmen, pours black with a small white head. Aroma has plenty of spirit barrels upfront, followed by dry toasted malt and a pronounced English malt character. Flavour brings out plenty of the grand marnier and amaretto barrels, moderate toasted malt, some sugars, and light English bready malt. Really unique barrel expression. Very good, atypical for the Dog series.

(Draught at BrewDog Camden, London, 21 Nov 2024) Black colour with foamy, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of chocolate, sweet espresso, nuts, almonds and liquorice. Malty, roasted taste with sweet espresso, dark chocolate, roasted almonds, liquorice, citrus peel, oak wood and a balanced cacao bitterness. Full body, quite sweet. On the boozy side, but really rich, complex and actually quite well balanced. Lovely beer!

Bottle at home picked up from Brewdoge online. A jet black opaque coloured pour with a lasting mid tan creamy head. Aroma is big meaty roast, ash, alcohol, ashu coffee, charred wood, amoretto. Flavour is composed of boozy berries, thick meaty salty roast, burnt cake, some ash, medium sweet, brandy snap sugars. Lingering savoury.

Keg at Brewdoge Clerkenwell, 21/08/24. Black topped with a khaki head. Nose is chocolate, spice, booze, toffee, mellow barrel, nutty twang. Taste comprises chocolate, spice, mellow barrel notes, roasted bite, dried fruit rinds, molasses. Full bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a light rising boost. Tidy enough impy but not getting much barrel expression.

Black beer, thick tan head, with a nutty, orangey aroma and a bit of caramel too. Flavour follows suit. Nuts, orange, malt, chocolate, some boozy warmth a rich, slightly oily body. Delicious.

Keg at Brewdog Paddington, London. An almost black coloured pour with a thinnish beige head on top. Rich, roasty, malty, chocolate, amaretto, orange, vanilla taste, aroma similar. Some nice barrel action here. Brewdog can still produce some decent beer every now and then.

It's got all the expectations of a fantastic beer and yet it somehow falls short. I have to go searching for the flavours whereas at 11% they should be punching me in the face. Enormous promise but I just don't go wow!
