330ml bottle at Lokaal. The landlord & brewer at Briljant recommended this when I asked from something local, dark and fairly strong. Pours a deep black with a white head. Aromas & tastes of dark fruits, chocolate, hints of peppers, bread & toasted malt. Medium body. Dry finish. Highly enjoyable

Spiced 'dark saison' (which is apparently still a thing to some craft brewers) from the Netherlands. Mousy to creamy, pale yellowish beige, bit irregular ring of foam with thin veil in the middle; 'dirty' chocolate brown robe with misty ruddy edges. Aroma strongly dominated by spice, star aniseed indeed, ras-el-hanout, red curry paste, gravy, soggy brown bread, black peppercorns, fresh bay leaf, Christmas pudding, gingerbread, 'pepernoot', tea. Sweetish, fruity onset with dried beef stock cube-like umami effect and notes of fig and red apple, lively carbonated with a smooth mouthfeel; walnutty and toasty-brown-bready malt base with bitter finish, completely drenched in the star aniseed and Szichuan pepper spicing, with additional effects of clove, bay leaf and nutmeg; this spiciness adds further bitterness to an already hoppy and toasty bitter tail. Lots of earthy, 'dirty', bready yeastiness too. A bit of a mess, as is so often the case when spices are used all too generously. Not my cup of tea.

Moutig, chocolade, droog, licht kruidig, anijszaad. Haal er geen szechuan uit. Voor een NHB een goed bier.

Tap at NBPF. Red wine, funky yeast, alcohol, light herbs, white wine, berries, a tiny hint of Szechuan peppers but just a hint, cardboard. Medium sweet, bitter and some sourness. Medium bodied with slick feel. Weird.

I was rating this at Lokaal when owner/brewer Rob came in and looked over my shoulder. Interesting to hear him tell the story about this beer. Bottle. Dark ruby maroon. Herbal aroma. Taste is slightly boozy burnt caramel, licorice, light cocoa. Unique

Bottle [thanks to RW80] @ home shared with a friend. Clear red brown color, huge fizzy off-white head. Smell and taste lightly malts, hops, floral hops, fortunately I don’t taste any peppers. Also no anise btw, at least nt in the flavor. Decent body and carbonation. Decent beer.
