I am fascinated with what drives a blender’s palate and the process behind their blending theory. A couple times a year, I offer my barrel house to a discerning palate and help shepherd a blend to fruition. Cory King of Side Project arrived in Santa Cruz in February 2023, and after an hour of blending from Private Press barrel stock, an incredible blend emerged from the glass. This blend of stout and barleywine presents bold tones of burnt toffee, caramelized fig, toasted coconut, and espresso, while a rich, fudgy backbone rounds out the experience. At Twilight celebrates the passion of our peers, the practice of discovery, and the subjective nature of art.
Blend:
Duke (barrel #202) aged 26 months in Bookers barrels
DeJohnette (barrel #224) aged 10 months in Buffalo Trace Experimental barrels and 18 months in Knob Creek barrels
1/3 Adderly, 2/3 Hubbard (barrel #259) aged 14 months in Port barrels, 12 months in Woodford Double Oak barrels, 11 months in Brandy barrels, and 9 months in Old Elk Wheated barrels

Rated at Platinum Bierstube. Roasty, complex and heavy with barrel notes, some malts, prunes, figs, chocolate sauce, vanilla, cocoa, earthiness and hints of licorice. Pretty balanced and complex slow sipper.

Bottle. Pours unclear deep mahogany, minimal head or lacing. Aroma is rich, fudge, vanilla, toffee, bourbon, light port, but of leather, treacle. Flavor is sweet, light plus bitter. Full body, silky, decadent.

On tap at Oakland Arbor. Aroma is very malt forward with lots of chocolate and graham cracker notes. A bit lighter notes of toffee, dark caramel and even lighter notes of toasted bread, burnt sugar and molasses. Light bourbon and laochol.nktes with faint oak that adds some almond and char notes. Faint anise, tobacco and leather notes. Pours jet black with a small, thick dark mocha head that recedes fairly quickly to the edges where a thin film lingers. No lacing and sheets of alcohol. Flavor is somewhat sweet with lots of chocolate, graham cracker, toffee and caramel notes. Lighter roast, toasted bread, molasses and treacle notes. Some marshmallow and almond as well. Moderate bitterness and medium light alcohol notes. Light notes of dark fruit, anise and leather. Medium light bourbon notes and hints of oak. Mouthfeel is full bodied and a bit slick with medium carbonation. Low astringency and moderate alcohol warmth. Overall, a really solid BA stout-ish beer but I would expect nothing less from this collab. Really nice malt notes with complimentary barrel character. More leather and tobacco as it warms.
