Enjoyed at the Loon. Pours a dark brown colour, looks hazy with copper highlights, a frothy beige head, good retention and dirty lacing. Licorice candy nose aromas. Roasted malt start with the licorice showing up in the finish. Lingers a bit with burnt malts, smoothly flowing with hints of chocolate malts. Wet mouthfeel. Seems more like a stout than a porter, with the licorice well-balanced, but nicely present.

A reddish copper brown ale with a thin brown head. In aroma, sweet fruity chocolate malt with coffee grind, raisins, vinous character, light cinnamon, molasses, very nice. In mouth, a nice sweet fruity chocolate malt with light peated notes, coffee grind, licorice, alcohol warmth, very nice. On tap at Wellington Gastropub.

(On tap at the brewery, Aug 30 2014) Did not make notes at the time, these are lingering impressions. Poured black with a small white bubbly head, no lace. Aroma had a bit of roast with coffee notes, black licorice, fennel, a sort of vegetative character. On the palate, a fairly standard porter body with a dark malt and a bit of coffee, largely subservient to the notes of black licorice, fennel, some roast. Not too sweet overall, fairly dry and a bit roasty in the finish with a fennel/evergreen hop aftertaste. Light to medium bodied with average carb. Fairly drinkable, about the additions obviously so you would hate it if you hate black licorice. Did not have the heft of body and concentration of flavour that GLB’s Opa baltic porter has - I think the licorice works better with a big beer like that. Good effort though.
