The Durham Black Bishop stout is intense in flavour but not in body or strength making it an entirely quaffable and interesting beer. The Black Bishop has flavours and aromas of a roasty coffee, peat, and a sweet chocolate and caramel; smokey notes are definitely at the forefront. Our director, Mark, likes this beer so much he necked half the bottle before the rest of us had a chance to try some. Thanks for sharing!

Bottle, a fortnight out of date. Very dark brown with a light tan coat. Chocolate aroma with light earthy roast and hints of (tart?) plums. Chocolatey but leans dry with modest but distinct roast, plums and decisive bitterness. A little bit ashy after a while.

Bottle thanks to allmyvinyl. Appearance - close to jet black with the odd orange/red chink. Tan head. Nose - creamy chocolate and caramel. Taste - fudge and chocolate this time. Some dry woodiness at the back. Palate - close to medium bodied, dry, lightly roasty finish. Overall - quite liked this.

Half-pint, cask, shared with Finn at Victoria Inn. Steady fawn-coloured head, black in the glass, lacing rings. Inviting smell of roasted earthy malts. Fine mixed taste of raisin, liquorice, and chocolate. Lightly roasted malt-driven end. Easy to drink. Pretty good. (Durham 29.01.2020).

Delt med Rune. Svart. Lysebrunt filmskum. Litt lacing. Lett sjokoladearoma. Smaken mest lakris. Kakao i avslutningen. Tørr.

Cask-conditioned at the Swan, York 11/5/2019. Near black in colour, with a tight, beige, head. Toasty malts, some chocolate sweetness, a touch of leafy hop and dryish finish. Good.

Bottle. Slow gusher. Aroma has a little smokey malt and some sweeter raisin notes. Similar flavour. Quite intense. A shame about the over carbonation.

A decent but unremarkable stout. No nasties and a very pleasant drink but nothing exciting to recommend.
