The Durham Black Bishop stout is intense in flavour but not in body or strength making it an entirely quaffable and interesting beer. The Black Bishop has flavours and aromas of a roasty coffee, peat, and a sweet chocolate and caramel; smokey notes are definitely at the forefront. Our director, Mark, likes this beer so much he necked half the bottle before the rest of us had a chance to try some. Thanks for sharing!

13/6/2018. Bottle from CentrAle, Newcastle. Semi-gusher. Pours very dark brown with a large foamy beige head. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malt, moderately smoked, coffee, hops and dried fruit. Medium sweetness, moderate bitterness. Medium to full bodied, slick texture, average to soft carbonation. Increasing roasted bitterness to finish. Not sure to start with, not a fan of the gushing and the smokiness, but once both calmed down, became enjoyable.

Bottle at home in Hackney - sourced from Beer Hawk. Pours clear, deep browm with a modest, creamy khaki head. Dry, ashy roast in the aroma, burnt toast, mild cocoa. Light sweet flavour with some dirt, more ashy roast, bitter chocolate. Light bodied with fairly lively, massaging carbonation. Pleasant finish, lightly drying, with continuing ashy toasted malts, scorched earth, baking cocoa. A nice hard-edged, low-ABV stout.

Cask at CBC, Covent Garden on 20th August 2017. Sepia black wit shallow tan foam and full lacing. Delicate roasty aroma. Bitter roastiness in-mouth, akin to good Guinness. The aforementioned flavours dissipate slowly in the finish. Smooth mouthfeel and a medium body.

Clear dark brown colour, tall creamy/yeasty tan head, dissipating slow and uneven, patchy lacing, kinda dirty sight. Aroma roasted malts, chocolate, dark caramel, light licorice. Taste medium sweet and bitter, malty, roasty, milk chocolate, toffee. Bit thin sweetbitter aftertaste, chocolate and roasted malt notes, earthy touch. Medium body, oily to watery texture, average carbonation, smooth and tasty stout.
