375ml bottle from the Grumpy Goat in Reading. Pours opaque brown with no head. Aroma is vinous, woody, nutty. Taste is medium sweet, woody, nutty, chocolate, barrel. Sourish finish. Full bodied.

Bottle from Drinkmonger. Pours an attractive clear dark brown with a tight beige cap. Aromas of red wine, dark plums, chocolate. Taste is port-like, chewy chocolate, raisins. Light sour finish.

375ml bottle from Fyne Farm Brewery Shop - Deepest ruby body, no head. Strong ruby port, winey, plum and dark fruit nose. Taste again vinous, warming booziness, little acidic. Quite dry, but fairly flat.

375mL bottle, pours a deep dark mahogany with a tiny beige head. Nose is full of dry red wine, port barrels, dry caramel, and bready malt. Flavour is complex, with notes of sherry, port barrels, and dry red wine. On the dry side, with a nice bready toffee finish. But this is almost entirely a function of the wine. Nearly flat carbonation, which could be amplified, but it's fitting enough. Very good.

Bottle from Fyne Ales. It pours dark brown with a limited bubbly khaki head. The aroma is rich and oily, unctuous and intoxicating, depth of dark fruits, plum, prune, jammy blackberry, fig, black grape, raisin, fruit cake, tangy,loads of fortified wine, light vanilla, blackberry crumble, blueberry muffin, vinous, damp oak and victoria sponge cake. The taste is slick, oily, crazy fruity and jammy, fig, plum, prune, date, blackberry, blueberry, raisin, sultana, black grape, port, sherry, Madeira all present, damp oak, touch of spice, light alcohol presence, touch of bitter dark chocolate, toffee, very vinous, tangy and jammy with a smooth fruity finale. Fulsome body, fine carbonation and slick mouth feel. Nice depth. Loving the fortified wine character.

Almost clear deep amber brown beer, small bubbly tan head that buggers off in pretty short order. Smooth palate, quite light, carbonation is somewhere between reasonable and decent, anyways at a level that suits this brew just fine. Smooth malts, quite light, a touch of creamy sweetness. Mild dark toffee, not sweet. A nice touch of vanilla from the various oak barrels. Good blend of barrels as well, port, sherry and madeira always look natural bedfellows to me instead of getting lost against bourbon, whiskey and cognac et all. The nicely thought out blend means there is a nice level of porty red berries sitting in a good backdrop of Madeira richness of ripe dark fruits. The sherry comes through on the back end, a little sweeter. All comes together into a light but rich tasting finish. A fine example of thoughtful barrelling and blending in a barleywine.
