The rarest of beasts indeed. In April 2019 we filled just four oak Speyside whisky barrels with a batch of Double Mochaccino. Painstakingly bottled by hand and naturally bottle conditioned, this is a rich, full-bodied and ridiculously smooth treat. Our most special beer to date should be savoured; favourite chair and roaring fire optional.

Bottle at home in Hackney - picked up from HOTM Pours black-brown with a tight, creamy beige head. Quite sweet, with hearty dark malts, burnt sugars, modest roast, gooey chocolate, toasted caramel and toffee, some dried berries, raisins, plum, cherry. Full bodied, viscous and chewy, oily, with fine carbonation. Warm to hot in the finish, some further sticky sweetness, more gooey chocolate, milky coffee, aged berries, nips of earthy bitterness, rocky road, fudge. Tasty beer, especially in a small dose - 250ml is a great format for a beer like this.

250ml bottle from Westhill Service Station. It pours darkest brown to black with a decent, but dissipating tan head. The aroma is rich and decadent, sticky, sweet, chocolate gateaux, vanilla cake frosting, toasted brown sugars, whisky, toasty, hint if bonfire, coffee, mocha vibes, toffee crisp, charred wood, liquorice and umami. The taste is slick, rich roasted malt, bitter - sweet, sticky, umami, chocolate gateaux, maltesers, whisky, oak, warming booze, some spice, vanilla fudge, sweet coffee, mocha, jammy fruits and marshmallow with a slick whisky chocolate finish. Fulsome body and fine, foamy carbonation. Rich and decadent. A flavour dessert ale.

250ml bottle from Appellation Wines. Pours black with a thin tan head. Aromas of dark chocolate, bourbon, coffee, soy sauce. Taste is fruity, boozy, chocolate and coffee, maybe some dark fruits. There's a lot going on, but I think it'll come together more over time.

250ml bottle from the brewery. Thick black with a thin, tan head. Sweet whisky aroma, the whisky comes through strongly in the flavour before mellowing into smoky chocolate and roasted malt. Delicious

Bottle from Appellation Wines. Appearance - dark chocolate, wood, coffee and booze. Nose - dark chocolate, wood spice and Tase - creamy, dark chocolate. Wood, booze and spice follow behind. Palate - full bodied, creamy texture. Dry, roasty and boozy finish. Overall - a wee bit clumsy at this stage. Could be world beating in year or two. Very nice though.

Bottle from The Beer Cave. Black body with a thin tan head. Faint lacing. Aroma of hazelnut, coffee and chocolate. Flavour of espresso, soy sauce and plum. Medium body with a slick texture. Soft fizz. An amazing beer - so smooth and complex. I don’t usually like barrel-ages beers but this is excellent. I’m a big fan of the wee 250ml bottles for a beer of this strength.

Black beer, thin head which mostly becomes a thin film. Smell is smokier than I expected for Speyside ageing, possibly coming from the wood but there is a boozy whisky hit to the smell along with a bit of toasty coffee. Flavour is quite strongly of whisky up front but the other flavours do come through to balance it out really well. Rich chocolate, toasty coffee, a decent amount of maltiness with the warming sweetness of the whisky makes for a really nice blend of flavours and keeps the spirits-y alcohol in check. Smooth, rich and very tasty.
