Cask at the Hope Tap (JDW) Reading. I'm a big fan of elderberries. Each autumn my wife and I collect elderberries and make elderberry jam. I also make elderberry sauces to go with pork and lamb. I love elderberries. Do I was looking forward to this beer. It's an attractive deep mahogany colour with a loose beige head. There's toffee and wood to the fore, some lightly roasted malt and cappuccino, with a generic dark berry taste behind. There's a creamy texture, and a lightly dry finish with more wood it. There's a touch of leaf mulch, but it's not quite the full on elderberry flavour (ie blackcurrant mixed with woodland floor) thar I was hoping for. It's an ESB with fruity hints, that strays into porter territory at times. It's not a patch on my wife's jam, but I still quite like it.
