James and Julie is our take on a Flemish sour brown and offers an aroma of raisins, figs, cherries, and caramelized sugar. Mahogany in color, this medium-bodied ale finishes with clean acidity and a hint of spice. We brew this sour brown ale with Pilsner, Special B, Maize, and Chocolate Malt and ferment it with our house yeast strain. It then ages for two years on stainless steel with our own blend of Lactobacillus and Pediococcus cultures.

375 c&c from Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA. Pours bright copper with a transient beige head. Aroma of mildly sour cherry with some other things. Med body or so. It’s rather sour, with cherry and wood. The pedio paper thing is present, but for a change it works well. Very sour, very woody. Very tasty. Very nice.

Poured from a bottle dated 08/24/2015. Aroma is rather fruity with lots of raisin, cherry, figs, and some berry notes. Some medium light caramel notes with a light nuttiness and faint chocolate. Some medium light acidity is present in the aroma. Pours a fairly clear, burnt amber color with some copper hues and a medium sized, somewhat thin, tan head that recedes to the edges where a slight film lingers. Flavor has a moderate acidity but it is balanced by a nice sweetness. Some light caramel and burnt sugar notes with a faint chocolate note. Lots of cherry, fig, and berry notes with some raisins as well. Some lingering acidity and fruit notes. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth, Overall, this is a very nice beer. Clean acidity with lots of fruit character and some balanced sweetness to cut the acidity. Nice malt profile as well. Acidity may be a touch too strong, but otherwise ideal.

375mL bottled 8/24/15, drunk 12/4/15.
Good clarity throughout this dark auburn liquid, leaving the sediment behind. Light beige head atop is large and slowly fades to cover.
Fairly straightforward, to-style nose is quite fruity, with plentiful cherry/raspberry esters and light brown sugar notes. Acetic acid definitely prevalent, though certainly not problematic, in my estimation. There is a good deal of "sharpness" to it, and perhaps some alcohol is mixing in there, as well as the lactic acid. Peppery and other various spicy phenols noted.
Bold, rather aggressive flavors showcase plenty of acetic acid, with prune-like acidity as well as toffee, raisin and light cherry. Heavily sweet/sour juxtaposition, which is very surprising to me, given that this has spent two years in stainless and 3.5 months in the bottle. Would have expected something much more mellow and homogenous, but mellow this is not. Lots of sharp acidity lingering and the sweet notes are a bit much too, but I wouldn’t go as far as to call it an acetone bomb. Still, plenty of enjoyable flavors here and good texture/carbonation as one would expect from Allagash.
