Seasonal Beer – Winter You wouldn’t really expect Vladimir Lenin, leader of the 1917 Russian Communist Revolution to feature as one of Islington’s most famous residents, but he was! No 30 Holford Square is where the thirty-two year old Lenin resided with his wife. At that time he was merely working on his newspaper ‘Iskra’ and his cataclysmic involvement in the Russian revolution and the creation of the Soviet Union that lay ahead was something that no one at the time could have predicted.

Cask, 6 % abv, half pint at the brewpub in Islington. Creamy fawn coloured head, clingy lacing, almost black in the glass. Prominent aroma of spruce and caramel malts. Blended taste of sweet brown malt balanced by notes of spruce. Mid-dry bittersweet ending. Decent. (London 13.01.2019).

Cask handpull at The brewery Islington. Clear deep red brown colour no head. Again its sweet. Struggling to tell difference betwee this and the Watchmaker. Some malty jammy fruit. Touch of drying hop on the finish. Perhaps more brown malty than the Watchmaker. Scores about the same though.

Pigs Ear Fest. Cask. Clear deep amber beer, patchy pale tan head. Palate is light, semi dry and has reasonable fine carbonation. Mellow malts, some dark malt character. Little caramel sweetness. Crystallised orange and mild chocolate. Dry finish shows some powdery dark chocolate. Nice enough.

Cask at the brewpub. Pours clear, deep amber with a frothy, tan head. Lovely aroma with ageing, lightly tangy berries, rich bread, supple toffee. Medium sweet flavor with rich, lightly toasted bready malts, mild cocoa, toffee, chocolate-covered cherries. Medium bodied with fine carbonation; good condition. Finishes sweet and lightly sticky with further ripening fruits, berries, some toffee, bread, minimal bitterness. Very tasty stuff, well balanced and nuanced.

Cask at the brewpub. I suddenly have the urgency for eating three different types of potato at the same time. Dark reddy caramel coloured pout with a stodgy mid tan head. Aroma is harsh nutty , woody grainy with a harsh tart Apple. Flavour is composed of milky caramel, choc and dark dried fruits. Palate is medium bodied with slightly milkjy on the tongue, light yart apple. Palate is semi sweet with semi sweet, moderate to low carbonation. Ok. Lingering sweet fruit.
