Viking DNA was the very first beer we ever brewed at Brew York and thus it holds a very special place in our hearts. We are thrilled to see it return.

Smoked malt compliments six other malts to create a smooth and well balanced porter with subtly smokey undertones.

Old rating from 14-01-17 - Brought back from York by a friend for my home collection, from a newly founded brewpub in the city. Pours a black colour with a beige foamy head that lasts. Aromas of roast coffee. Tastes of roasted coffee, chocolate, vanilla, apple & hints of smoked toffee. Aftertaste has hints of smoked toffee & roast coffee bitterness.

Cask at Ship Aground, Stafford. Pours almost black with a sizeable thick foamy tan head and good lacing. There’s vanilla and chocolate in the aroma. In the mouth it is sweet with a creamy texture and roasted malts to the fore. Also caramel and hints of cola and ginger at the start with vanilla and traces of coffee and lactose coming through later leading to a slightly sweet finish. This is a decent porter.

Overactive rocky tan head left froth on a rich mahogany coloured still body. Bitter, malt & roasted aroma. Medium to thin bodied, well carbonated & sharp on the palate with a clean back. Make, bitter berry, under ripe fruit, pith & tangy tastes.

Can from the brewery shop. Looks good with a bit of an aroma, even if I did pour it too cold. Overall I would say that the whole thing was lacking. It didn't have the richness I was for some reason expecting. There was malt and some smoke, but it didn't have an oomph.

Handpull cask at the Blue Boar, Leicester. Its pretty dark - dark brown with a purplish note and barely translucent - with a here-and-there ring of tan head. Like smoky note and prunes on the aroma, not much else. Tastes better than it smells, with the smoky malt balancing the stone fruit sweetness. Very flat body. Hard to get too very excited about this, but it's certainly drinkable and the smoky quality lifts it abive average.

Appearance is nearly black, with a huge brown pillowy head which settles into a finger. Aroma- chocolate, airy hops, toast hints, malt, hint of caramel. Taste- coffee, dark chocolate, dark malt, toasty malt, biscuit, underlying hop bitterness, rough malt. Light on the smoke, but hints of it at the end.
