Aroma of dark autumnal berries, with undertones of coffee & dark chocolate. Similarly, but amplified on the palate, as roast & bitterness also come through. Pleasant, gentle, lingering dry roast finish with some bitterness, & a hint of smoke. Definitely true to type (Stout).

Bottle from Beautiful Beers. Appearance - dark brown to black with a deep fawn head. Nose - dark chocolate, molasses and subtle blackberry. Taste - blackcurrant and menthol. Almost lozenge like. Palate - roasty in texture and finish. Light bodied really. Overall - quite unusual.

Rocky tan head left a good cover on a jet black still body. Malt & coal aroma. Medium bodied, low carbonation, soft on the tongue with a dry clean back. Malt, tobacco, light smoke & bitter vegetal tastes.

Purchased somewhere in Norfolk, not totally sure but think it may have been Sir Toby's Beers in Norwich Market. Black with a beige head that was so huge and craggy and long lasting that I nearly went and got a spoon to attack it with. Coffee and sweet plain chocolate with quite a salty kick and a touch of ash. Creamy but with a hint off dryness. Salt and a light burnt note in the aftertaste.

23/11/2018. Cask at the Harwich and Parkeston Winter Ale Festival 2018. Pours almost black with a small off-white head. Aroma of chocolate, heavy roasting, coffee, ash, dark fruits and liquorice. Light to moderate sweetness, medium bitterness. Medium body, slight sticky texture, soft carbonation. Finished dry with chocolate, ash and berries. Quite traditional, pretty good.

Gravity cask at the Drayman’s Son, Ely. Black, impenetrably so, with a ring of grey-brown head. Surprisingly low in the aroma stakes: a bit of coffee, bitumen, salt liquorice. Bitter taste, with a coffee and very bitter chocolate note. Finish betrays a hint of fruity hop bitterness, which gives way to a carob and turmeric aftertaste. A worthwhile brew.
