Super deep dark brown coloured body with a thinnish, very fast-dying tan head. Aroma of burnt coffee (a la Starbucks), star anise, deep caramelised sugars, some oatmeal and grain with a highly smoked note - like peat and rich tobacco. Medium-bodied; Strong tobacco and oatmeal flavours show at first with a deep robust anise and canella flavour that shows through to the coffee, lactose and prune flavour on the finish - all still quite strong, but the sweetness gives a nice interlude. Aftertaste shows the smoked and bitter notes of grain and alcohol with some coffee and nutty flavours, while ending with an earthy and pungent bitterness, mainly from the alcohol, but also from some spice and oat notes. Overall, a quite strong, but robust beer that is maybe, if anything, a touch thin on the body, considering the style, but a good beer throughout that is nice for folks to sample if they like the style. I sampled this twelve ounce can purchased from Harris Teeter in Potomac Yard (Arlington), Virginia on 05-May-2019 for US$7,50/six pack [on clearance], sampled at my house, a few blocks away, in Washington on 03-June-2019, less than a month later.

Pours dark brown color with tan head. Roasted malt aroma with light coffee. Roasted malt flavor with coffee more prominent on flavor than aroma. Some chocolate also. Medium body with average carbonation.

8 day old bottle A: Very clear dark brown, not red color. Small but stubborn head leaves sticky lace strings. S:Very light scent of cold black coffee but with a little sweet chocolate. T: Surprisingly fruity and bitter with hops rather than roast, which is there but subtle. Nice balance with a lightly sweetish coffee aftertaste. M: Full bodied with soft carbonation and a fairly clean finish. O: Very nice surprise. Easy to recommend though a bit strong for me.

Very drinkable, very straightforward coffee porter. Nice to have chocolate malt without added chocolate, leading to a rather dry take on the style, with a modest cocoa sweetness coupled against a formidable java roastiness and a moderate espresso finish. Undercurrents of coffee cherries and caramel, but, again, not enough to grow sweet, and the fade has a nice lingering java acidity to it. Immense coffee nose, and the pour comes out dark brown with a brief beige head and decent lace. Good beer.
