White is a Belgian style Witbier, with 35% wheat malt & special yeast creating the characteristic spicy, clove & banana aroma, and fine white foam. Additions of lemon & orange peel with Lemondrop hops gives a distinctive citrus character. Serve well chilled in a wide glass to enjoy its refreshing & aromatic qualities. Any slight haze is natural, and typical of this style of wheat beer.

[330ml bottle from Waitrose, Marlow at 5% ABV] Given the smaller bottle size and higher ABV than previous reviews, I wonder if this is a new recipe - I will try to find out. Pours a muddy pale peachy-brown with a negligible head and slight to moderate carbonation. Cloves and ginger in the aroma, and cloves continue into the flavour. It’s pretty heavy on the spices in fact, with plenty of black pepper too. There’s obvious wheat chaff, along with some unusual woodiness - exotic tree barks and furniture polish maybe. A lemon lurks in the background, and a banana tries to catch your attention as the last few drops slither down your throat. It’s an atypical Belgian white; it’s far more complex and interesting than your Hooegaarden clones, but as a result it’s less refreshing. I liked it though.

Bottle Waitrose, Thame, Oxon, consumed 29-05-08 Golden with some cloudiness, aroma is a little spicy. Tastes of wheat with a dash of spices, its ok but not a great example of a wheat beer.

500ml bottle from Waitrose. A rather disappointing example of a witbier. An unappetisingly muddy straw colour, with a white head that disappeared immediately; some cloves on the aroma but also insipid tinned fruit; very thin and wheaty in the mouth; leaving a dry and unpleasantly spiced aftertaste.

Pale yellow and hazy. Clove and citrus aroma. Light bodied, wheat and seville orange flavour. Very thirst quenching. Nice with a an experimental British brewer making a genuinely Belgian style ale, and doing a good job at it too.
