A deeply flavoured dark beer maintaining Oakham's reputation for brewing top quality, black beers that are complex yet with easy drinkability. Aromas and flavours of fruity hops, spice, pine and grapefruit predominate with notes of coffee and chocolate also to the fore in this rich and satisfying beer. Columbus and Simcoe are the hops.

Keg at the Hanging Bat. Pours black with a thin beige head. Aromas of blackcurrant, coffee, light chocolate. Taste is more of the same. Better as it warms up, more fruity berries. Clean finish.

Keg at Andrew Usher’s. Black body with a thin beige film. Very faint lacing. Aroma of berries and liquorice. Flavour of stewed plum and dark chocolate. Medium body with a creamy texture. Soft fizz. It’s quite ugly and less intense than I was hoping for. A tasty beer, which doesn’t match the high standard of some of the previous Oakham beers I’ve tried.

Keg at The George Croydon. It pours jet black with a thick tan head. The aroma is rich roast, chewy malt, dark chocolate, umami, salted liquorice and earth. The taste is bitter, rich roast, salted caramel, liquorice, charred wood, toasty, earth, light alcohol with a lingering dry - roasted finish. Medium body, moderate carbonation and foamy mouth - feel. Big and punchy. Great to see this sort of thing on keg at a Spoons!
