Another of these many BCBS variants, one with blueberry juice and almond extract added; at Bumb3r. Moussy, yellowish-brownish beige, open head over a black beer with hazy wine red edges. Aroma of indeed strong almond – or better, marzipan, gingerbread, cognac, bitter chocolate, coffee liqueur, blueberry jam, glue, toast. Sweet onset, candied dates and raisins, very light blueberry sourishness but more subtle than is usually the case in fruit stouts so that a thick, bittersweet, deeply chocolatey, toasty and walnutty malt profile remains dominant; the marzipan-like almond effect, however, is stronger than the blueberry effect and dominates in the finish, heated by a whisky-like alcohol glow. Ends very boozy, a bit too much so for me, but the nose is fantastically desserty and the flavours are bold and elegant at the same time, though I personally would not have minded more thorough spicy-sour blueberry effects.

Oily black. No head. Smells of amaretto like dissarono liquor. Yeah. Blueberry is not what I’d rate this. Actually a little blueberry cough syrup at the end. Tons of amaretto. i do think this one needs a few more years.

Bottle thanks Bryan. Pours a dark black color with a medium brown head. A huge fruity nose. Rich, huge berries, cocoa, ash, sludgy chocolate. Damn great. Smooth. Not hot. This is one hell of a beer.

2017 Bottle @ home (12.6% ABV). Black color. Brown head with little retention. Aroma's: marzipan, griesmeelpudding, sweet liquor, light bourbon, vanilla. Retronasal it's blueberry, almond, boozy, sweet, roasty. Flavor is heavy sweet with some fruity sourness and almond. Fairly strong alcohol feel, warming the throat. Above medium bodied. Wood comes out in the finish, sweetness stays, light dryness. A nice treat and great dessert.

500ml bottle. Pours pitch black with a small brown head. Aroma of roasty malts, wood, blueberries, hazelnuts, almonds, marzipan and bourbon. Taste is really sweet, sticky and syrupy with some roastiness, bourbon, loads of blueberry juice, some almonds and marzipan candy notes. Finish is sweet, sticky and slightly syrupy with some stuffy blueberry notes, some bourbon, almonds and marzipan. Quite different compared to the regular one, this one is really sweet and a bit stuffy.

Draught at Stoddard's, 11/22/17.
Dark ebony, undetermined clarity with dark ruby highlights on the edges. Light tan head immediately fizzles to a ring.
On paper this thing sounds pretty scary and a great recipe for disastrous adjunct dominance. Much to my pleasant surprise, the soft chocolate, moderate roast and modestly spicy barrel character only slowly takes on light blueberry and almond towards the end. Neither dominant nor fake/tacky/sugary, both the blueberry and almond are mild and pretty well-integrated in to the rest of the beer. The blueberry smells more like smelling an empty basket of blueberries and the almond only presents a touch of light vanilla-honey-cream character (marzipan, as they note in the CD). The main force of the beer is a pretty robust barrel character that is balanced by the malt and roast, with little/no toasted character (maybe light coconut at most, and this matching the almond). Alcohol is certainly present, but it's not sharp or forceful.
Flavor assumes the character of the nose, with a rich, but slowly drying body that picks up plentiful tannin along the way. Blueberry and almond sit on the finish, certainly apparent, but not dominant or themselves sweet/fake. The barrel is interesting and spicy, as moderately-sweet chocolate-vanilla and medium-strong roasted notes fill out the edges. Thick, viscous, but reasonably well-attenuated for its size, with low but engaging carbonation. Surprisingly good and drinkable for its age, though of course, still has some syrupiness and a bit of aggressiveness yet. Based on potential, this would score very high, but I'll score it as is, for now, and revisit.
