Our IPA recipe is influenced by the American Style of IPA beers, golden straw in colour with a lacing head. It gives a nice aroma of floral hops and a background of malt on the nose. A nice medium-bodied beer that shows some caramelised malt on the palate with balanced bittering hops. The long finish has yet more of the floral notes encountered in the aroma. Hops: WGV and Challenger.

Tomorrow's Oldham Beer Festival is having a predominantly Welsh selection this year, so to get things started I have picked this number out of my cellar, which was acquired in the Tenby area of Wales a couple of years ago. Floral aroma, some in taste, where some sugars are a little tastier than this element.

Cask at The Dog, Burton on Trent. Pours golden yellow with a small off-white head and good lacing. Not much of an aroma – only some vague hoppy character. In the mouth it is very briefly sweet and malty to start with before quickly becoming bitter with traditional hops and a hint of citrus. Later come spices and some hints of marmalade. Hops increase in strength leading to a dry finish. This is rather nice. It is very much an old school IPA but it is well balanced and packs a punch considering it’s strength – I couldn’t believe it was only 3.6% !

Bottle shared by Grumbo. Aroma is malty, buttery, grainy, vegy, bready and cereal. Very sweet and not a pleasant sweet. Thin body and quite smooth. No real finish kick.

24/6/2024. Bottle bought at James Pringle Weavers, Llanfairpg. Pours clear orange gold with a small frothy off-white head. Aroma is grainy, veggie, sweet malt, butter, fruit, cereals, quite distinct sweet sherry notes. Medium to heavy sweetness, light to moderate bitterness, slightly tart. Moderate body, oily watery, soft carbonation. Not great.

Handpull cask at the Queens Vaults, Cardiff. Light gold and clear with a tight off-white head. Light malt on the aroma but nowt else. Bittersweet taste with a bit of sourness, more like a lager to me. Not much here at all really, not a good drink.
