Cask at Crewe Dog, Crewe. Pours a dark chestnut with minimal off-white head and good lacing. The nose has autumn fruits and some hints of pumpkin. In the mouth it is obvious from the start that there is rye in the beer, plus grains and malts. It is also quite sweet to start off with, but some spiciness creeps in later, along with red berries and some traditional hops. Finish is quite spicy. This is quite nice – very drinkable.

Cask at Cherry Reds, Birmingham. Poured a dark reddish brown with a frothy white head. The aroma is zesty citrus, sweet malt, fake sugar. The flavour is moderate bitter with a light, watery but flavourful, sugary malt, light smoky, hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Given the earlier ratings I didn’t expect much but I was pleasantly surprised.
