Bready lemon and apple nose. Hazy copper, medium head. Bread, lemongrass, cardamom. Medium body, easy carbonation. Doesn’t taste much like a pilsner to me at all. I think the 2016 release labeled Poppy Agave Ale is a different beer from the 2009 release labeled Poppy Agave Pilsner. A pretty enjoyable offering from Magic Hat.

On tap at magic hat brewing. Pours out amber topped with a small head. Nose is cereal malts some lemongrass citrus hops and a little sweetness. Taste is more of the cereal grain malts some citrus and spice.

Pour is a dark gold with a average white head. Aroma is kind of a neutral grain with I’m guessing agave. Flavor is again more grain with some agave that gives the beer sweeter syrupy feel. Finish is quickly gone with not much left on the tongue. Nothing offensive about this beer but there is nothing redeeming either. Reminds me of some honey beers.

It looks like this has been "unretired" by Magic Hat and rechristened Poppy Agave Ale. Same look to the label, which also references this Odd Notion release series. Bottle pour into nonic pint glass from Hannaford, Exeter NH. Aroma is sour Pilsner malt. Appearance is clear gold with attractive sparkle, finger-width fizzy white head with poor retention and no lacing. Taste is as aroma also with some peppery spiciness and late nuttiness and bitter mixed in for the finish. Palate is light bodied with thin texture, average carbonation and dry, crisp finish. Overall, a pretty mild beer all around without complexity to the aroma and you have to sort of reach for the complexity in the taste. Not objectionable but not noteworthy.

Growler - I never thought I would be defending Magic Hat, but this is the second beer I’ve had from them lately that was supposed to suck, but I wound up liking (the last was Single Chair) - sure, the agave is a little strange and vegetal at first, and it’s a little sweet up front, but those noble hops come on strong - the sweetness is clean, so the bitterness overcomes it and shines through from the middle onward, leaving a semi-dry, lightly floral finish - the poppy and agave are actually quite subdued - a bit of bready, buttery character through the middle - not as crisp or refreshing as I like my pilsners to be, but it is certainly a tasty beer.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Gilly’s, 4/2/09
Aroma: Malty sweetness, some floral/earthiness
Appearance: Kind of a clear pale gold color, you could mistake it for a Miller Lite (not a compliment)
Flavor: Kind of an earthy sweetness with a little sourness in the aftertaste
Palate: Lightish body, not a terrible mouthfeel
Overall Impression: It’s not a bad beer I guess, but at some point I need to learn not to try every new beer these guys make, I never really like any of them.

12oz bottle courtesy of SamGamgee. Filtered blonde-yellow color, very light. Alcohol shows itself in the aroma, not unlike a macro Pils. Some fruity sweetness, the agave certainly comes through. Light and tangy, some lemon-lime. Fruity malt backdrop. Ok for what it is.

Not much aroma. Hoppy on the palate like a stronger APA or mild IPA. Has a decent smoothness about it. Looks like a pale lager.
