In these unsettled times you have to pick your moments. I will do that tonight with 750 ml bottle of The Null found a month or so back at Susan's in Santa Fe, NM. I have had numerous other quadrupels with barrel aging. This will be my first that is smoked. Almost four years old, it has a nice pop to it when the cork came out. Making the pour into my Chimay glass a dark cola-brown, sort of like La Trappe Quadrupel, along with a consistent skim of egg shell brown foam.I have a smell, ripe fruit, slightly musty and spice. I have a taste, the smoke is obvious but not intrusive, dark plums, raisins, bread and malt. It is better than I expected, glad to have located a bottle.

Corked and caged 750. 2016 vintage. Aroma is caramel, dark fruit, lemon peel, dark bread, dusty basement, smoke, Pours a really dark brown, nearly black, with amber highlights and a one+ finger beige head with great retention. Some mold or something around the lip of the bottle after I pulled the cork. Taste is sweet with mild smoke character; faint tartness in the finish. Some licorice notes, dark bread crust. Not bad.

750 ml bottle with a bottling of May 2016. Purchased at the brewery. Deep hazy ruby and color, thick lasting off white head that showed lasting retention. Aroma is toffee, yeast, prunes, and the weakest amount of smoke. Just a wisp.

I think time in a bottle helped this in relation to earlier reviews, the flavor has a good amount of Belgian yeast presence with dark fruit and toffee overtones. The smoke lingers in the background but is balanced by the toffee and prune/ raisin nuances. The ABV is pretty much hidden. Mouthfeel is proper. Overall nice. If you have a bottle, it maybe time to pop this.
