NEXT UP in the Beers-that-are-too-subtle-for-the-palateless-slobs-to-appreciate-Series, we have a 2014 750mL bottle drunk 7/6/15.
Far and away the best Mystic beer I’ve had to-date and I’ve had a lot of them. Assuming this is about 8-9 months old and really hitting its stride now. The first thing I smelled upon uncorking it was the unmistakable smell of Dupont in all its well-developed glory. Nice. Light leather, plaster, minerals and pepper and just a hint of cranberry acidity on the backend with very light, well-attenuated pils malts providing light balance. Gains more fruitiness as it warms, but the delightful Dupont-iness never leaves and the yeasty, cellar-like aroms linger nicely. No alcohol or flaws.
Similar flavor profile replete with spicy phenols and light leather, cork and plaster. Maltiness is soft, refined and well-attenuated providing a medium body and perfect balance. Cranberry acidity/sharpness notable on the end, with ever so slight a cranberry juice flavor. Awesomely light-handed with the fruit; it’s just a minor element as it should be. Kind of wish there were no cranberries so I could live it up with all of this yeastiness uninterrupted, but regardless, this is a deliicious, delicious beer. Mystic needs to keep doing stuff like this.

Bottle. Pours with a hazy peachy orange hued body with a white head that lasts. Aromas are of grass and hay, medium carbonic, some phenols, tannins, red wine grape skins, some herbal/spicy hop notes. Flavors are of some tannin, medium bitterness, bready/biscuity/doughy malt structure, light yeast esters/fruit notes. Herbal, on the bitter side of things. Medium acidity. Fruit flavor is more a shadow than directly cranberry. Quite bitter/tannic on the palate. Lively carbonation.

Bottle shared by Jim, thanks! Pours a hazy peach with a hint of redness. and a white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a decent amount of cranberries with a musty Belgian yeast and a grain backbone. Flavor has more of a floral note with some underlying sweet grains and a hint of cranberry.

Draft @ Sunset Grill and tap. Light pale gold color, thin cap of white head. Nose is grains, dough and citrus. Flavors reminiscent of crackers, musty yeast with lots of citrus in the finish. No problems with this brew but it feels like it’s missing something. Kind of bland.

750ml bottle at DC tasting. Hazy golden-tan. Creamy thin off-white head. Not a pronounced cranberry, more of a mild citrus balance..creates depth. Some white wine notes. Pretty nice.
