Bottle at home in London - sourced from the brewery. Pours rich, mostly clear orange-gold with a frothy, off-white head. Lovely aroma, with ample ripening citrus fruits, lightly toasted pale malts, crackers, pine. Lightly sweet, with understated piney bitterness, hints of earth, more citrus fruits, orange rind, tangerine, lightly toasted bread. Light bodied with average carbonation. Well balanced on the finish, with further mellow resinous pine, bready malts, touches of grains, rindy citrus. Massively drinkable.

Bottle from Cork & Cask. Hazy amber body with yeast flecks floating below a medium beige head. Low carbonation. Good lacing. Aroma of toffee, lime and hard candy. Flavour of red grapes, tea and caramel. Thin to medium body with an oily mouthfeel. Soft fizz. Mild flavoured by The Kernel’s standards. Good to see them brewing Amber Ales again - I’m hoping for a single-hopped Chinook version.

Bottle at home picked up at the brewery last week. Mostly clear reddy amber coloured pour with a lasting loose creamy beige coloured head. Aroma is nice slighly toasted grains, biscuit, lemon citrus and tangerine hop on the nose. Hint of tropical mango on the nose as well. Flavour is composed of light toasted bread, slight bark, tangerine, slight burnt grass. Palate is semi -sweet, grainy, drying bitter finish. Slightly harsh in the finish.

Keg at Cotteridge Wines during the 2016 Cotteridge Convention. It pours deep amber with a small, bubbly white head. The aroma is fresh, juicy, orange peel, mango, pine and some tropical fruit action. The taste is crisp, bitter – sweet, earthy, toffee, pine, varnish, general citrus, light alcohol, brow bread malt base, caramel and cereal with a dry, earthy finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Doesn’t stand up against their pale ales of similar abv, but overall ok.

Keg at Cotteridge Wines, Cotteridge, Birmingham Saturday 5th March 2016 Amber in colour with a slim fast departing head. Fruity with some caramel, some sweet oranges, yes mostly citrus, it’s fine but fairly pedestrian for Kernel. A6 A3 T6 P3 Ov12 3.0

Tap. Cotteridge tasting room. Hazy amber. Messy, bubbly, off white head. Nose is robust, chewy, citra hoppage. Spicy, toffee malts. Taste has light sweetness. Light spice. Some dryness. Citrusy, bitter finish. Ok.
