Bottle from London Brewers Market, Spitalfields Market, London. An amber coloured pour with a thin white head on top. Sweet, fruity aroma. Tastes sweet, fruity, caramel, quite thin, lacking in complexity.

(Bottle, 0.33 l - No 4313 - bottled on 10 September, courtesy of VastActiv, 20141122) The beer poured deep amber and clear. Its head was small, sparse and white. Aroma had malts, signs of oxidisation, raisins and earth. Palate was medium bodied and quite dry with medium carbonation. Flavours were sweetness, malts, caramel, earth and bitterness. Aftertaste was sweet and bitter. A somewhat weird strong ale.

Aroma has sweet fruity tones, toffee and caramel. Also some harsh malt. Flavour has harsh malt, minerals, some hops, grapefruit and raisins. Alcohol is also present but does not disturb. Quite typical English BW. Better than I expected, I must say.

Pours dark reddish brown with a smooth head. Aroma of ripe fruits, caramely malts, toffee and syrup. Taste is stuffy, sweet and syrupy with notes of ripe fruits, caramel and toffee. Finish is sweet and stuffy. Unbalanced.

Cask gravity at the Wandsworth summer beer fest. Red orange hazed with a lasting loose off white head. Aroma is raisin dried fruits, plastic, wood and low booze. Flavour is nice rounded fruits, raisin, sweet orange. Nice smooth ferment very clean. Good lingering fruit. Palate is full, viscous and warming alcohol.

Bottle at home, from ABM, 27/06/14. Clear golden amber with a moderate beige covering that retains well. Nose is caramel fudge, woody, candyfloss, toffee apple, light spice, dates, dried fruits, hint of booze. Taste doesn’t quite follow on from the nose, sticky apple pie, caramelised sugars, toffee. Medium + body, fine carbonation, sweetish licks and moderate booze tones in the close. Ok barleywine, doesn’t carry any huge amount of depth when held up to the best of them, but a solid easy drinking offering none the less.

Tasting at Bruce’s pad. Lightly hazy amber beer with a small pale cream coloured head. Smooth palate. Mild dried fruits. Smooth malts. A bit shallow. Lacks the malty depth and maturity of a good barleywine.

Bottle thanks to Kenneth. It pours deep ruby with a small white head. The nose is wood, earth, light spice, honey and dried fruits. The taste is woody, earth, toffee, oily, toffee, prune,raisin, date, honey and some alcohol warmth. Full body, fine prickly carbonation and oily mouth-feel. No real depth unfortunately, but it is pretty drinkable.

Bottle shared at Bruce’s in London - massive thanks to Kenny for yet another rare local beer. Pours clear copper-ruby with a fine, creamy white head. The aroma has dry wood, dry berries, some pine. Big sweet flavor, ripe orange, bread, some leaves. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly warming finish with heavy bread, caramel, mild leafy bitterness, candied apples. Pretty rich and pretty tasty if not especially complex.
