Sherwood Reserve is an extension of our Natural Selection wildlife beers. This beer pays tribute to Nottinghamshire’s famous Sherwood Forest, recognised across the globe as the home of famous outlaw, Robin Hood. Sherwood Reserve, like many other reserves across the nation, is in need of maintenance and conservation to preserve its natural beauty and wildlife.

Castle Rock has brewed stouts on a seasonal basis for a long time, and the popularity of this beer style has continued to grow. Sherwood Reserve, launched officially in January 2015, marks the first stout to join our range of regular beers. Brewed with fresh Columbian coffee beans, Sherwood Reserve is a smooth, balanced and decadent stout, with notes of chocolate and coffee.

Cask at The Wellington, Birmingham. Pours black, small beige head, nice retention. Aroma is sweet, toasty, coffee. It's quite dry and bitter throughout but with enough sweetness to balance. Roasted malts and dark chocolate dominate. Smooth body. Good.

Cask at the VAT and Fiddle, Nottingham. Poured a clear dark brown colour with an everlasting frothy tan head. The aroma is roasty malt, liqourice. The flavour is moderate liqourice bitter, with a smooth, rich, roasty, smoky, ashtray, liqourice hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. A solid cask stout.

Cask half @ Alexandra Hotel, Derby after a walk at Kiddleston Hall. Dark pour, clear I'd say. Cream coloured topping. Aroma has burnt malt, mild coffee. A bit watery and placid to taste, but there are distant chocolate, coffee and dark malt notes to be found.

Keg at the Canalhouse, Leicester. Very dark brown, brodering on black. Opaque with a small beige head. Roast malt in the surprisingly light aroma. Beautifully balanced taste, with a dogged bitterness from the earthy hops and scorched malt pushing away any sweetness from the initial sip. Medium to heavy carbonation. Not bad at all.

Half-pint, cask at Two-Tailed Lion in Leicester. Shared with Finn. Beige head to a black body, spotty lacing. Roasted malty aromas, hints of liquorice. Similar taste profile of liquorice on a roasted dark malty backbone. Roasted, earthy, ending. Decent stout. (10.02.2019).

Cask at Ealing Beer Festival 2018, Ealing, London. A dark brown coloured pour with a medium beige head on top. Roasty, malty, chocolate, coffee on the nose. Tastes similar, roasty, malty, chocolate, coffee. Expected better to be honest but it was OK.
