Black Bull is a classic porter brewed to a local recipe dating from 1865. Uses a blend of six fine malts and the best English hops to give a dry coffee flavour.

Cask at Pied Bull, Chester. Pours a very dark reddish-brown with a small beige head and good lacing. The nose has chocolate (mainly) and roasted malts. In the mouth it is smooth and creamy with dark fruits and milky coffee. After a while roast malts and chocolate come through as well. Finish is quite malty. This is nice – I must have caught it on a good day @FatPhil

Sunday night, 20th Sep 2020. Three beer flight of their own beers in the Pied Bull, Chester. All three beers were in poor condition, glad I only had a third to drink of each! Black body, beige topping, malty with a slight chocolate leaning, meh.

Third, cask, 5.3 % abv, at the brewpub. Plain black body, patchy beige head, dotted spots. Inviting dark malt-driven smell of liquorice and chocolate. Similar taste of well blended dark malts, including mocha chocolate and liquorice backed by coffee notes towards the ending. Smooth on the swallow. Tasty porter. (Chester 26.01.2020).

Cask @ The Angel, Manchester. Black with a very thin off-white head. Has an almost luxuriously smooth texture with plenty of roasted malt in aroma and taste that’s maybe slightly burnt, with a long finish that lingers in the palate.
