"400" Ale commemorates the founding of the first Virginia Settlement and with it, the founding of the American brewing industry. Beer was an essential component of everyday life in Jamestown, only the security and shelter provided by the triangular shaped fort and cultivation of edible (no doubt including barley) crops outranked the production of beer in importance. Fresh water flowing in local streams and the recently excavated well provided a source of potable water, but beer and other "processed liquids, primarily beer" were preferred drinks.

This ale, like the ales of the time, is brown in color. This beer may be more robust than 18th century brews, a liberty we chose to take. How could we possibly do justice to so important an event of 400 years ago, with anything other than a truly robust, full flavored contemporary "Imperial Brown Ale." Cheers

Very woody aroma with lesser hints of maple syrup. Opaque brown, thin head. Maple syrup is much more distinct on the palate. Chocolate syrup is also present. Alcohol is not noticeable, but there is a whiskey note. Holds up surprisingly well after 4 years. I was very fortunate to find this bottle. Not much in the way of hops, but after all this time, I wasn’t expecting any. I usually prefer a hoppier brown, but this was quite good.

Bottle in trade from Butters. Tall tan head that floats over a clear dark brown body. Coffee dark chocolate malt aroma. Tastes like your typical brown ale with a slightly sour/bitter note in the finish. I would probably pass on this one next time.

Nice deep brown coloured body with a thinnish tan head and some bubbles rising from the bottom. Aroma of sour grapes, malt, tobacco and even a bit of nuts. Medium-bodied; Strong malty flavour with the potent sour qualities tucked in with a bit of sweetness. Aftertaste shows more of the same, something funky going on for the majority of the taste. Overall, a decent beer - not absolutely horrible, but I was expecting a bit more from this one. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Grape & Gourmet in Virginia Beach, Virginia on 25-May-2008 on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

22oz bomber purchased at the brewery shop. Displays/suffers some of the undesirable qualities other raters have mentioned, such as oxidation, sourness, and little to no head. Relatively uncarbonated. Despite these flaws, I found the beer to be quite enjoyable. Rich porter-like toffee and chocolate notes. Some solid brown nutty malt flavors come through as well. Doesn’t say the ABV on the bottle. I’d really like to have this one on draft.

Rerate... old rating was clearly infected. 5/4/3/2/7/2.1. This one, brown pour, clear, medium head, good head retention and lacing. Aroma of caramel and toffee with faint off-notes. Taste is chocolate, caramel, toffee, a bit of a chalky note. Fairly strong bitter leafy hop notes. Medium bodied. Past its prime, but fortunately devoid of the horrific infection notes of before. There have been two VA breweries who had very bad infection issues but have taken steps to fix them successfully. It always makes me happy when I can increase the score of a Virginia beer.

22 oz bottle. Flavors are pretty subtle, but nice which includes fruit, caramel, and a little hop. Not what I’d expect from a "American Strong Ale" - though it could be deceptively strong, in which case it masks well.

Clear deep mohogany body with a medium frothy light brown head. Sweet caramel and molassas aroma with a hint of rum-soaked fruit. Sweet molassas and rum-soaked fruit flavor with a touch of dry chocolate and a slightly astringent finish.

Quite nice. Not very complex but what is there is very good. High abv surely but it is well hidden. Thick, heavy palate. Aroma and flavor have sweet malt and brown sugar, and flavor has moderate hops as well. Thanks Bob.

From the bottle poured a completely opaque deep brown with a creamy 1 finger, lacing, slightly tan head. Smells nutty and malty, with a faint hint of maple. Flavor is very nutty, but not from the yeast like some Belgians, but from the malt. I can honestly say I don’t think I’ve had a beer like this. Darker and more roasted malts than your average nut brown, smoother and sweeter than an imperial nut brown. This is much lighter and more drinkable than it looks. Even with the darker malts it still could have used more of a hop presence to add some complexity. Nice beer though.
